Nicholls Family Reunion 2023 recap
On Saturday, September 09, 2023, a lively group of Nicholls family members and friends gathered at Caister Community Centre in Abingdon Ontario. This year was the 60th anniversary of the first Nicholls Family Reunion back in 1963.

An energetic crew, led by Rick Clarkson, got the tables and chairs all set up. Many thanks to all involved in that.

As always, the quantity, quality and variety of food set out before us was impressive. After Phil Schuyler asked the blessing, the lineups formed at the food tables, and we got down to the task of sampling the bounty. Shortly thereafter, a very noticeable hush fell over the hall, with the only sound being that of utensils clanging on plates.

At 1:30, a Zoom call had been scheduled to provide an opportunity for some folks from out west to pop in virtually and say hi. It was nice to see Charles and Lynda Gare from Manitoba (not SK as previously reported). The technology wasn't perfect, but we did manage to offer them a glimpse of the folks in attendance at the hall. I hope that we didn't miss anyone else that had planned to join the Zoom call. My apologies to you if you tried to join a bit later and we missed you. I think we can probably plan a similar arrangement next year as well, so if any of our western family are interested in trying it next year, don't hesitate to let me know.

Once the Zoom call was over, we had pretty much completed the eating portion of the festivities. This of course meant that the washing up segment of the show was in full swing. As always, there was a great pool of talent that stepped up and helped make pretty short work of the dishes. Thanks to all involved. It certainly is appreciated.

When the clanging of dishes had subsided, Dorene Nicholls read a poem entitled A Tribute To Our Parents, written by Ross Nicholls on the occasion of the 25th Anniversary of the Nicholls Family Reunion, back in 1988. Great job Dorene. Included in the poem where a couple of items that would be helpful in the next segment of the program (see below).

Following the reading of the poem, Lori Danyshyn presented the Nicholls Family Trivia game that she had prepared. Copies were handed out to each of the tables, with groups of any size allowed to collaborate. The initial allotment of 10 minutes turned out to be far less than was needed, so Lori graciously allowed another 10 or 15 minutes for everyone to complete it. Once we received confirmation that all were done (or had given up), Lori, in true teacher style, "took up the answers" with the group. Kudos to Lori for compiling a great list of questions. The highest number of correct answers was 16 out of the 18 questions, very impressive I thought, as some of the questions were somewhat tricky (at least they were for me). I apologize for not taking note of those who got the highest number of correct answers. Some small token prizes were handed out for the winners, until the prizes were all gone. Great job Lori. Thank you. It was suggested that we do the same trivia game at next year's reunion, this time to test our memory rather an our knowledge.

With the excitement of trivia behind us, we circulated the collection plate to top up the funds in the reunion bank account. In the interest of not overflowing a small basket, John Nicholls requested a larger container be used, rather than the one that was initially handed to him. Next best option was a 8 quart stock pot. It seemed to work well, as a good sum was collected. Thank you all for your donations, which will help keep a balance in the bank account for the hall, insurance, and other expenses encountered from time to time. FYI, this was what was used as a collection plate. :-)

Susan Glavan brought with her a large bag full of lovely scarves, knitted by her husband Gord's mother. I failed to get a count of the total number, but I have to guess there was at least 20 of them, which represents just a small portion of all the scarves that Gord's Mom has knitted and given away to folks in need. In return for the free scarves, all Susan asked of us was to take pictures of us wearing the scarves. This is something that many of the previous recipients have done, and it gives Gord's Mom great pleasure. In keeping with this simple request, a number of pictures were taken, both individual ones as well as a group picture, showing off the beautiful handywork. For anyone who was at the reunion and has scarf pictures they'd be willing to share, please send a copy to me or to Susan. I can provide her email address if needed. A huge thank you to Mrs Glavan for this wonderful gesture. Those who received them are, I'm sure, very grateful. Thanks also to Sue for bringing them. It was a wonderful addition to the day. Here are a couple related pictures.

Our attendance this year was 55, which surpasses the attendance numbers in recent years. It was wonderful to have both Aunt Ruth and Aunt Jean with us, along with many members of their families. Both behaved themselves, and were front and centre in the group pictures. We had a number of significant birthdays this past year, including the two wonderful ladies mentioned above. Here's a list of theirs and others.
. Aunt Ruth 94
. Aunt Jean 91
. John 80
. Lyle 65
. Scott 60
. and a couple other cousins turned 60
We were also informed of a couple significant birthdays coming up later this year. We will include them in the list for next year.

It was great to have Jane (Swick) Hagan, Glenn McDonnell, and Casper, in attendance this year, all the way from Calgary. The last time Jane was here was in 2011. It was great to have you all. We look forward to seeing you again real soon.

While the reunion is a very happy time, there is one agenda item that is much less so. That item is, of course, the moment of remembrance for those members of the family whom we have lost. In the past year, we sadly lost one of the members of "The Originals", Uncle Russell. In addition to his passion for family, both his immediate and our extended, Uncle Russ loved to attend the reunion. In spite of the greater distance that he had to travel, if he could possibly be here, he was. I'm sure he was here in spirit today, smiling down on the great turnout that we had, and enjoying the fun of the trivia game.

As always, there are those who are unable to attend, but sent their regrets. We look forward to seeing them next year.
. Wendy and Dan - visiting Bryan (their son) and Ashley in Yarmouth NS
. Sherry and Rob - visiting Gail and Rick
. Gail and Rick - they were having company
. Stephanie and Gary - Gary is in hospital and unable to attend

We had a good time taking pictures of the group. For those who may have taken some candid shots throughout the day, please consider sending them to nchlls@rogers.com and I will get them posted for others to enjoy.

With the picture session done, the visiting continued. Eventually, the number of folks remaining had dwindled to a point that the tables and chairs could be taken down and put away. A huge thanks to all who participated in this or other cleanup activities, like sweeping floors, throwing out garbage, and cleaning up the kitchen and bathrooms. It's very true that "many hands make light work".

With the place all spic and span, those remaining moved outside while we waited for the lady to come and do the inspection of the hall before we left. A huge thanks to Ashley Hunter for taking care of the business end of the preparations for the reunion, to ensure that we have the hall booked again for next year, as well as for babysitting several plastic bins of books, historical material, attendance books, etc throughout the year. It is greatly appreciated.

Thanks also to Steve Lock for providing the microphone and amplifier to use for the day. It helps a great deal to have these available when trying to get the attention of or when speaking to the group.

A couple other things I wanted to mention
Email addresses:
If you or any members of your family did not receive emails regarding Save the Date (reunion) or the more detailed Reunion Invitation, please send me their email address to nchlls@rogers.com, so I can add them to the master list.
MyHeritage.com
We have a Nicholls Family Tree on this site. If there is any information about your branch of the family that needs to be updated, let me know by emailing me at nchlls@rogers.com, and I can get the updates done.

Finally, here are a few of the pictures from our great day. I hope you enjoy them.

That concludes the recap of this year's reunion. If there are any errors or omissions in the above, please let me know and I can correct it.

Thanks very much, and we hope to see you next year at Nicholls Family Reunion 2024.

Wishing you all ...

OR...

If you happen to be in a province, territory, or country that is not celebrating Family Day today, we are pleased to wish you the very best for whatever your celebration might be. For a little bit of insight regarding the third Monday in February, check out the info below.

Family Day in Canada is not a national statutory holiday, it is only observed in New Brunswick, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan and in British Columbia. Other provinces have holidays in February on the same day but these holidays aren't called family day. In PEI Islander Day is celebrated on the 3rd Monday in February and in Manitoba the 3rd Monday in February is the Louis Riel Day holiday. In Nova Scotia this day is called Heritage Day.

For our family and friends in USA, we wish you a very Happy President's Day.

Request for thoughts and prayers ... message from Lori
Apple Down!
Friday night Mom (Ruth Danyshyn) had to be rushed to the hospital after struggling all week with a cold, as her breathing was laboured and her condition was worsening alarmingly.
After spending all night in Emerg being assessed, she was admitted to the ICU at Markham-Stouffville Hospital and is being treated for her respiratory distress while they explore the source of the trouble (turns out it's some kind of virus).
Mom always rallies with the love and prayers of her loved ones so we're asking for your prayers and best wishes now as she fights to regain her health and is able to return home.
While she looks much better than Thursday night it looks like they'll be keeping her in for a few more days.

Thank you

Feel free to send her greetings through Facebook ~ she has her own account.

Seasons Greetings
Hello "Nicholls family" and friends

Well, believe it or not, we have reached the midpoint of December. Wow, time flies when you're having fun, doesn't it?

Mother Nature has provided us with a variety of weather samples over the past few weeks, from t-shirt and no jacket days to t-shirt, sweatshirt, hoodie, winter coat, snow boots, scarf, toque and mitts days. I know some of you have had it much worse than it's been here in Hamilton, but at least we don't live in Buffalo. :-) (My apologies if anyone does). One thing I'm pretty sure of, it's going to get worse (or better, depending on your perspective) over the next couple months, so we best accept it. It is, after all, winter in Canada (for most of us at least). Greetings to those south of the 49th. We hope you are enjoying your version of winter, wherever you are.

From my house to yours ...

I just want to wish each and every one of you (and yours) a very Merry Christmas and a Healthy, Happy and Prosperous New Year.
As well, to those who may enjoy other celebrations around this time of year, Happy Holidays. I hope everyone's holiday season is one of the best ever.

I had a really nice chat with Rick Clarkson the other day, and he asked me to send along his best wishes to everyone as well. So, from Rick to all of you, "Merry Christmas and Happy New Year".

Be safe!
Doug (for Nicholls on the Web)

PS ... Don't forget, you can keep up-to-date throughout the year by visiting here. If you ever have something you'd like to be shared, you can send me an email at nchlls@rogers.com or dgnchlls@rogers.com.

Reunion 2022 recap
On Saturday, September 10, the Nicholls Family Reunion was held for the first time since 2019. It was great to be able to get together with so many folks that we have not seen for so long.

While the attendance was down somewhat (38) from what we normally have, it was a good size group taking into consideration the number of folks who were unable to attend for various reasons. Many had informed us in advance of conflicts, so we knew the numbers would be down a bit. We will look forward to an increase for next year.

Fortunately, Aunt Ruth was in attendance, and on behalf of the Nicholls Originals, managed to keep us all under control.

Setup of the hall was all done by the time I arrived at 11:15. Thanks very much to all those involved. You know who you are. If I try and list everyone, I'm sure I will miss some, so I won't try.

One thing that has not changed during the three year hiatus is our ability to put together a great potluck. There was an abundance of very tasty dishes, as well as an equally impressive array of desserts to fill the gaps after the main course. Thanks to everyone for the impressive spread.

Brian Sullivan asked the blessing, after which the hall went very quiet for a while, as everyone got down to eating. It was kind of funny how quiet it got.

After lunch, the kitchen became a hubbub of activity as dishes and cutlery started clanging around in the sinks. Tea towels flapped and plates, cups and cutlery made a happy tune as they were returned to their alloted places until next year.

The collection basket was circulated, after which Ashley advised that we had received enough to cover the cost of the hall for next year as well as a couple other expenses.

A few announcements were made, including ...

  • masks, hand sanitizer and rapid tests were available for anyone who wanted them
  • regrets were read from those who had advised they were going to be unable to attend
  • recognition of three significant birthdays that occurred earlier this summer (Uncle Russ - 95 in May, Aunt Ruth - 93 in July, Aunt Jean - 90 in July)
  • Brian Sullivan shared details about three books of his that have recently been published. Samples were available to review. The books include poetry, sermons, lessons, or a combination of these. For further details and/or to order, feel free to contact Brian via email at bvsprchr@bellnet.ca
  • 40th Anniversary Cookbooks were available for free (or donation). There are still a few left even after a number of them were taken.
  • thank you to Ashley Hunter for managing the communication and other activities related to the hall rental etc over the past 3 years, as well as any financial related things. It has been a bit challenging keeping on top of the hall rental during this time, and ensuring that our reservations are in place.
  • thank you to Steve Lock for bringing a very impressive sound system with him for us to use during the reunion. From previous years, we know that it can be difficult to ensure that everyone can hear. This setup certainly eliminates that issue.

The last item on the agenda was sharing with everyone the list of family members that we have lost over the past three years. The list is unfortunately lengthy, given the period of time it covers. A moment of silence was held, for all in attendance to remember and honour these loved ones who have left us.

  • Uncle Jim Nicholls - 2019/10/14
  • Carolyn Fisher - 2019/12/12
  • Paul Schmeler - 2020/05/08
  • Claudia Robins - 2020/10/06
  • Lee Desmarais - 2021/05/02
  • Edwin Nicholls - 2021/05/07
  • Lynda Sherwood - 2021/06/13
  • Bridget Nicholls - 2021/07/18
  • Alicia Devana - 2022/07/29

We remember each and every one of the above fondly and miss them dearly.

A lengthy period of visiting followed the announcements. It was a great time (as usual).

As always, when the time came to wrap things up for the day, there was no shortage of helping hands to tear down tables, stack and put away chairs, sweep floors, throw out garbage, and do the final lockup. A huge thanks for everyone who pitched in.

I must confess, I lost track of time and did not follow through on my threat to have a little contest for the craziest mask. My apologies to anyone who had come prepared to participate. Perhaps I'll share some pictures of some of the ones I have. I feel like it might have been fun. Alas, perhaps next year.

All in all, it was a great day (including the weather).

We look forward to next year's reunion, and to seeing even more of the family again.

Aug 04, 2022
Thoughts and prayers request
Please remember Uncle Russ (Nicholls) at this time, as he is in Huntsville hospital due to a recent fall.

Visitation is restricted to immediate family, but your prayers and well wishes would be appreciated by Uncle Russ and the family, as he continues his recovery. Uncle Russ would also love to receive cards or notes, since he is unable to have other visitors in person.

For mailing address information, you can contact one of the girls, or myself (Doug, by text at 416.720.5680).
Please note: If I don't have you in my contacts and therefore just see your phone number, I will almost certainly ask who you are, just to make sure I'm not sharing info with someone I shouldn't. :-)

She leaves behind her loving husband, Larry and her cherished son Larry Jr, his wife Jaime and her Grandchildren: Cimantha, Griffin, Ian, Hayley and Emma.

Due to Covid 19, there will be no service at this time.

Congratulations Debbie

The Cutters Edge (sharing a great post from FB)

Every now and again a project comes along that has such deep meaning for us... like this little salon in Burk’s Falls.
This resilient and courageous salon owner has recently suffered back to back losses of her son, father and husband. But true to the ever graceful nature of owner Debbie Schmeler, she choses everyday to see the light and hope each new day brings, and we wanted her salon to reflect the beauty of her heart!
If you should be so lucky to get an appointment at DHD when the world reopens, you will leave a transformed human from being in the presence of such strength.

Nicholls Family Reunion 2020 - CANCELLED
Good Day All

Please be advised that Nicholls Family Reunion 2020 has been CANCELLED.

A number of factors have been considered before coming to this decision, but I believe it is the right one to make under the circumstances.

First and foremost is the health and well-being of every member of our great family. I am absolutely confident that no one would knowingly attend if they were sick and risk the health of anyone else, family or otherwise. However, the problem with this Corona virus is that it is not always possible to know. Therein lies the risk.

Secondly, Ashley has been advised that the hall in Abingdon is not taking bookings yet. Although that could change over the next few weeks, we can't be certain of it, and therefore moving ahead with a plan to meet without having a confirmed site might not be a great idea.

And finally, we suspect that in light of everything that's happening now, and new things that will be happening around that time (including kids having just returned to school under somewhat unfamiliar conditions), the turnout might be quite low.

For those interested, we may try to have a "virtual" Nicholls Family Reunion 2020, making use of Zoom (an online video call application that can be used on PC, Mac, tablets, smart phones, etc). It will give us a chance to at least see some of the family (including those from out West or East who wouldn't be able to attend in person). If it turns out to be chaotic or doesn't work, at least we tried, and who knows, it may be good for a few laughs. Stay tuned for more info.

If you think of anyone in the family who may not receive this information via email or Facebook, please make them aware.

Enjoy the rest of your summer, and hopefully we'll have the opportunity to chat virtually on Saturday, September 12 and then look forward to a triumphant return to Abingdon in 2021. .

Thanks and take care.
Doug

A celebration of Paul's life will be arranged at some point in the future after restrictions related to Corona Virus have been lifted.

To a place where God will guide her to the next journey.
Just pure love! Peace and happiness!

Teach us, and love us!

2015 Nicholls Family Reunion a great success
Although the day was very soggy, and our numbers were down significantly from normal, the Nicholls Family Reunion 2015 was a great success. We enjoyed all the elements that make it a great time every year, such as mountains of food, great desserts, time for visiting, catching up on events that happened during the year, and meeting new members of the family. In addition, this year, thanks to Lori and Candy, we also enjoyed a number of games, based on the Survivor theme. Teams were selected in round-robin fashion, by age categories, which resulted in full participation by everyone in attendance from age 5 to 95. The games included nail hammering, potato peeling, butter churning, pantyhose baseball bowling, ladle and water race, and finally, the balloon and ankle stomp fest. A great time was had by all.

Minutes and pictures will be posted over the next few days.

Thanks to all who were able to attend, and we look forward to seeing everyone at next year's reunion.

Get Yourself Tested
Important Message from Candice Campbell on February 5, 2015 at 11:37am

I am writing this note today to make a plea... Get yourself tested!

As you may know, I was diagnosed in September 2014 with ovarian cancer. I have had a full hysterecomy and 4 chemo treatments so far. One of the masses found via catscan did not shrink with the chemo given. It was not able to be removed in surgery either since too interconncected with other organs and blood supply. I will soon start on another form of chemo and hope this one works to shrink it, so that possible future surgery can be done to remove it.

During all this, ... (read more)

Update from Gary (Nov 5)

thoughts and prayers request from BC
I received a message from Sandra Desmarais today, advising that Lee has been dealing with some health issues over the past while. His kidneys are only functioning at about 40 percent. He is being treated with some strong steroids for this as well as to stabilize his immune system. They are waiting for the test results, but they think it may be auto immune kidney disease, possibly a complication from a previous surgery. He had emergency surgery three times in a 24 hour period back in December. It was not a good month.

Please remember Lee, Sandra and their family in your thoughts and prayers.

remember Aunt Jean
I received word today from Ben that Aunt Jean could also use your thoughts and prayers. She has been scheduled for some tests on March 22 in Hamilton. She has been advised she has fluid around her heart, she has swelling in her legs etc and a lump on her breast. Please remember her and her family in your thoughts and prayers as she faces these issues. I spoke with her this evening and she was in good spirits.

Thanks for the update Ben. I appreciate it.

thoughts and prayers requested
Please remember Margaret, Gary and their family in your thoughts and prayers as they deal with some challenges that have come up rather suddenly over the last few days.

Gary and Marg went down to Florida early in February after receiving the “all clear” from Marg’s oncologist. While there, Marg began experiencing bad headaches. Due to weather conditions at the time that made driving too dangerous, Marg flew home for assessment. Upon arrival of her flight, she was in a state of collapse and eextremely sick. She was taken immediately to Emergency at Welland Hospital by Shannon. Subsequent examinations revealed the presence of a brain tumor as well as the growth on her lung that had earlier been considered of no concern. Gary flew home on Friday and Shannon and Jocelyn picked him up from the airport and took him to Hamilton General where Margaret had been transferred on Thursday night.

Marg had surgery on Saturday afternoon to deal with the tumor on her brain. A plan of care was developed for her by the surgeons and oncologists. Marg was discharged from hospital on Monday and is now at home resting. Follow-up CT scans seem to indicate that she came through her surgery remarkably well. Chemo therapy and radiation treatments are very likely to follow, but not until there is sufficient healing from the operation.

Your thoughts and prayers would be very much appreciated by the entire family as Marg’s recovery continues.

Stanley Danyshyn
It is with great sadness and a profound sense of loss that we announce the passing of Stanley Danyshyn (Poppie) in his 84th year on Tuesday, August 21, 2012. Stan passed quietly in his sleep, at Markham Stouffville Hospital, and leaves behind his beloved wife of sixty-one years, Lois Ruth (nee Nicholls), his four children Janice, Barbara, Lori and Scott, and their spouses Stephen, Tom, Brad and Carolyn. Poppie will be deeply missed by his grandchildren Samantha, Julie, Mitchel, Brianna, Zachary, Cory and Clayton.

Family members and countless friends will always remember Stan for his constant love, overwhelming kindness, generosity and of course, his unforgettable, booming laugh. Stan was a true family man and thrived on the happiness of his loved ones. He was a proud and active member of the International Union of Elevator Mechanics, Local 50.

Friends and family will be received for visitation on Thursday, August 23rd at 2-4pm and 7-9 pm at the Highland Funeral Home, 10 Cachet Woods Crt, Markham (just east of the 404, off 16th Avenue and across from Buttonville Airport) (905) 887-8600

Memorial service will be held on Friday, August 24th at 1:30pm at Markham Bible Chapel, 50 Cairns Drive, Markham.

In keeping with the family's wishes, donations can be made to the Markham Stouffville Hospital or the Gideons International.

The Very Best Dad in the World ! ~~ Stanley Danyshyn
Today, my Dad finally let go of his hold on this world, secure in the knowledge that he was loved and had left a legacy of love with all those whose lives he'd touched. Dad cared strongly about everything he did and his greatest pride and joy was always in this family he created and loved with all of his heart. I'm sure it was hardest of all to leave his Ruth, who, in his words had already put in over "4 life sentences" and was his greatest love of all. Even up to the last day they spent together, they would hold hands, comfort each other and remind each other that they still had each other's hearts. We love you with everything inside of us, rest easy,Dad, we'll will take care of Mom until we all meet again.

Stanley Danyshyn

P.S. I'll post details about Dad's services as soon as decisions have been made.
~~Lori~~

Message from Lori - Jun 08, 2012
Our Dad (Uncle Stan) could use your prayers. His prostate cancer's worsened and its swollen to a size that is now interfering with his bladder function. We had him in the hospital the night before last, spent the night, brought him home, then had to turn around and take him back a few hours later. The doctor's say that the prostate cancer's metastasized to his bones and as of yet, we don't know what course of action they're going to take with it. They're just waiting for a room for him and then they'll be watching him and boosting his sodium levels over the next couple of days. We REALLY appreciated all your support when Mom was so sick -- your cards and notes felt like little tangible pieces of love to her, and they boosted her up immeasurably. Pops could really use some boosting now too, but mostly what we need from you are your prayers, for Dad (and Mom's) health issues and Barb's continued strength as she continues to be our "medical warrior" in overseeing his care in the hospital. Thanks -- Lori=

Update: Jun 14, 2012
Just spoke with Lori and Aunt Ruth. Uncle Stan is now home from the hospital. He isn't able to get around on his own, but with help, he was up today, and was able to spend a good portion of the day in the lazyboy chair. He had gone to bed when I talked to Aunt Ruth. Please remember both of them, as well as the family in your thoughts and prayers.
~Doug~

- My apologies to Phil and to Larry for the delay in posting this news item...Doug

This past Friday afternoon June 17 ,2011, Lynda and I had the pleasure of seeing cousin Phil graduate from the Francis Sandy Theological Center in Paris Ontario. This center is part of the All Native Circle Conference of the United Church of Canada. After 5 years of study and training and encouragement from family and friends and congregation Friday was graduation day. On Saturday at the Oneida Church on River Road, The Reverend Phil Schuyler was covenanted and installed as minister, pastor and teacher of the Oneida United Church. As some of you may know and remember this church has long been part of the Schuyler history for well over a hundred years having held many family events there, some happy and some sad. On Saturday it looked a little brighter and it wasn't just the sunshine, it has some new life and energy. Congratulations are in order. Phil's email is mapashark@rogers.com

Happy Trails,
Larry

- Hey All, just a quick note out to all of you. I got back from AK late last night. Long haul from the Arctic to upscale Colorado in 36 hours. Boats, bush planes and 737's I'm back in one piece. Just sitting drinking coffee this morning getting my head around this fast paced world. 500 emails waiting, mostly trash I suspect and a couple of meetings planned over the weekend to set up my next work projects. I am very well, though tired. I had a day and a half off in late June, then 24/7 till today, a little pooped right now. I'll be in touch with you all soon. Hopefully over the weekend I will figure out when I am coming to Canada for a visit.

Love to all of you, talk soon.

- Please continue to remember family in your thoughts and prayers right now, including (but not limited to) Margaret, Aunt Ruth, Aunt Sis and Aunt Marie. Please remember them all as they face some challenges.

Some updates:
Margaret was back home Aug 24 with some treatments schedule to begin Aug 29. Aunt Ruth is doing well after her recent hardware upgrade :-). From what I hear, she's kicking butt (I won't mention who's, okay Lori) at Phase 10. Aunt Sis is holding her own, waiting for some required procedures to be scheduled. Aunt Marie has completed her radiation treatments. She remains in Dunnville Hospital needing to gain some weight. That process is not going well right now. Her next appointment with the Oncologist is September 12.

August 09, 2011

I don't have up-to-date information on everyone's condition right now, but I can tell you that Aunt Marie has completed about half of her radiation treatments in Hamilton. She is slowly gaining some weight. She will be reassessed at the end of the 15 treatments, to determine next steps. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers on her behalf.

Her challenge now is to gain back some weight so she can move on to the next phase of the treatment. At this point, what that will be has not been determined.

Hello,
My mom Margaret Nicholls (Gary's wife) was sick with pneumonia and she went in for x-rays and a cat scan. The Doctors have discovered a mass in her right lung and have decided to treat it as though it is cancer. She is having a biopsy today.

Please pray for my mom, we're all very concerned and worried for her.

- Note from Doug:
Uncle Russell sent me an interesting picture the other day. When he explained what it was all about, I decided I should share it with the rest of the family, as I'm sure others would be interested. Here's
the picture that peaked my interest. I hope you enjoy it too.

Details from Wendy McConnell:
The Canadian National Pond Hockey Championships have been held in Huntsville, at Deerhurst Resort for the past 6 years. Dan and I both have volunteered since it's inception. Dan is the Head of Officials and I am the Volunteer Co-Ordinator. Over the course of 2 weekends, usually the last weekend in January and the first weekend in February, this very popular event takes place on Sunset Bay (Penninsula Lake). There are 26 (almost) regulation sized outdoor rinks being used. We host 130 teams (both men's and women's) per weekend, teams are made up of 5 players and no goalies. The nets are only 6 inches high and about 4 feet long. Over 1400 games are played over the course of the 2 weekends. That's a lot of hockey, let me tell you! The rules vary quite significantly from regular hockey.

The need for volunteers is huge, as each rink must have a referee and scorekeeper per game. This represents roughly 110 volunteers over the 2 weekends. We start at noon on both Fridays, and finish up on Sunday around 3 pm . We have lights on the rinks for the night time games. The teams come from all over the world, to play in this prestigious event. In previous years we have had several NHL alumni players take part, and for the past 2 years Walter Gretzky (hockey's most famous Dad) acts as the honorary coach and guest speaker at the banquet. Part of the proceeds from the event go to the Walter and Wayne Gretzky Foundation for the CNIB. This foundation creates scholarship opportunities for blind and visually impaired kids to further their education.

Check out the website for further info.

- Jan and Steve Lock and Samantha and Julie could use your prayers and best wishes as they sort through what's left of their lovely old century home in Whitevale after it went up in flames in the wee hours of Sunday morning. Thankfully Stephen was only half asleep around 2 in the morning and was able to smell the smoke from the fire before it overtook the whole house. He and Jan were able to get to safety along with the family cat and a visiting dog before the smoke became impassable. The girls were not home at the time. The cause of the fire is not yet known, but the firefighters suspect it was electrical. We are so grateful that no one was hurt, but the entire family is shaken and heartbroken as they begin the task of sifting through the wreckage to see what can be salvaged.

September 20, 2010
- Check out Jeff Payne on YouTube. He's the golf pro in
this video featuring Rafael Nadal during a recent visit to Toronto for the Rogers Cup. Jeff is the second son of Sherry and Rob Payne of Huntsville. Jeff is the Assistant Pro at the Donalda Club in Toronto. Congrats Jeff. I'd love to get some of those lessons, but I fear you'd take one look at my swing and ask me to leave the course. Oh yeah, it's that scary.

- A number of family members at the reunion this year inquired about the availability of our

Nicholls' Family Favourites
recipe book that was put together back in 1988 by Brian Sullivan. Brian indicated at the reunion that he has the original documents and would be willing to generate a 2nd Print for anyone interested. A nominal fee will apply to cover the cost.

As some have already placed their order, we would like to be able to get the printing done as soon as possible for them. Therefore, we will take orders only for a period of time. Brian will advise me when the orders need to be in and I will update this note. Please check back for updates so you don't miss out, or place your order now by emailing us here at NICHOLLS ON THE WEB . Please provide your name, contact info, and the quantity you would like to order.

- Allan Nicholls announces the formation of a new band.

Dear Friends of SBR;
We would like to make you aware of some news regarding the SBR Band.
Over the years a number of the founding members of SBR have left the band as they found that the band commitments affected time spent with their families, work, and other personal interests.
We certainly understand and respect their decisions in this regard.
We would like to thank, Bruce Scott , Brian Ellis, Gord Sexton and Mike DiPaolo for their significant contributions to the SBR sound over the years. They remain good friends and will be occasional special musical guests" on stage with our new band - read on for more on that.
With these changes, some of the remaining band members, have decided to re-invent the group and move in a different musical direction.
We are pleased to announce the formation of BROKEN CADENCE.
We have added two excellent musicians who bring years of experience to the band's sound. Jim Glover, our new drummer, has played in numerous local bands and, back in the day, travelled extensively as a full time musician. Our new keyboard player, Paul Bulla, is classically trained and adds a brand new dimension to the band's sound.
Art Rebek, Mike Watt and I are very excited they have agreed to join us in this undertaking.
Our first gig is on Sept. 11th/09 at Cat's Caboose in St. Catharines.
We hope you will support BROKEN CADENCE in the same generous way you did SBR.
Thanks .... Allan Nicholls for the boyz in Broken Cadence.

- Update from Allan Nicholls regarding "Ride to Conquer Cancer".
Folks ... I wanted to bring you current on my collection efforts for the Ride To Conquer Cancer this June. Thanks to your generous support I am personally up to $9600.00 ( #1 for our team of 17 ). A few weeks back my band played at a charity fund raiser and we raised more than $16,000.00 for our collective contribution. At present our team is #5 on the list of top fund raisers.
All in all this has been a very succesful campaign. Now all we have to do is drag our butts over the 200 KM's ( Toronto to Niagara Falls ) to justify the donations made by friends and family. Again, thanks for your support.... Allan Jr.

FYI - Here is the web site again.

- Can you help Alicia Nicholls?.

Hello family!!!!
I am taking the Horse Groom Apprenticeship program at I CAN-T.E.R. in Ridgeway. At the moment I'm looking for a place to start my work but am having no luck.
My question to the family is this. Does anyone know of a farm in need of a horse groom?
The duties include, mucking out a stall, turning in and out, feeding, grooming and more. I'm hoping for something in the Welland or surrounding area, so I don't have to drive too far.
If something comes up, please email me at leesh20@hotmail.com
Love you all!!
Alicia

- Fantastic news report from Lori Danyshyn regarding Aunt Ruth :
Glad to report that Mom passed her 1st year since chemo check-up with flying colours. The doctors were thrilled with her progress as are we! To celebrate, she, Dad, Janice and Steven took a trip to see the penguins! They flew to south South America to catch an NCL cruise which will take them to a penguin preserve and up through the Panama Canal. Barb and Tom will meet up with them at the halfway point and cruise through the canal with them.

- Update from Allan Nicholls regarding "Ride to Conquer Cancer".
Thanks to the generous donations of many of my family and friends, I have already achieved my personal goal of collecting $5000. for this worthy cause. I am currently at $7465. and counting. I have set a new goal of $10,000. If those who have not yet donated want to get involved,

- Hi everyone,
In 2007 a very good friend of mine was diagnosed with cancer. My friend has since had surgery and is now cancer free. His treatment at Princess Margaret was exceptional. This situation prompted one of my riding buddies, Bruce Scott, to put together a team to participate in the 2008 Ride to Conquer Cancer, benefiting The Princess Margaret Hospital.
On June 20 - 22, 2008, I'll be participating in a 2-day cycling event and riding from Toronto to Niagara Falls, with thousands of other riders. All the proceeds will go to The Princess Margaret to support cancer research, treatment, and services. The Princess Margaret is Canada's leading institution devoted to cancer research and care, and the work they're doing is leading-edge.
I've agreed to raise at least $2,500, but I've set my personal goal at $5000.00. So here's where you come in - I need your help to do that. Could you please consider making a donation in support of my ride? Kindly use
this link to go to my webpage. The donation process is very easy and the cause very worthy. I greatly appreciate your support - in whatever amount you can afford.
Thank you in advance for your generosity! Allan Nicholls

Congratulations to everyone involved in organizing it. It was really nice. The food (lots of it) was prepared by the whole BBQ Gourmet gang. It was DELICIOUS.

Congratulations to Julie Lock, daughter of Janice and Stephen. Julie and her Scotia Rouge DragonBoat team finished in 1st place at the Canadian Nationals in Toronto. - Uncle Allan and Aunt Sis sold
their home of 57 years in Attercliffe Village and moved into Dunnville on August 22. They now live in a condo on Pine Street, across from Union Gas. Address details are available if you need them. Just flip us an email. I was talking to Mom. She has been there to visit and informs me that it is wonderful. Next time I'm in Dunnville, I'll be dropping in to say 'hi'. You should too. Just tell them that someone on the internet told you to.

Update : I had the pleasure of visiting Uncle Allen and Aunt Sis' new home on Sunday after the reunion. WOW, what a nice place. Gotta love that loft. From what I hear, someone, who shall remain nameless (right Judy?) has claimed it has her own. And the basement ... man oh man, could I use some of that space in mine. Congratulations! Very nice.

Aug 23 2007
- I had a nice chat with Uncle Russell this evening, and got caught up on some news from Huntsville.

Earlier this week, the Huntsville and Lake of Bays Railway Society had a special ceremony and erected a beautiful plaque in a new parkette along the shores of Lake of Bays. Several local and government dignitaries attended. The plaque describes the history of the "world's smallest railway". To see a picture of the plaque, click here. For an better look, you still have a window of opportunity to take a drive up to Huntsville and check it out for yourself. To see additional pictures taken at the unveiling ceremony (including the wording on the plaque), check out steamtrainhuntsville.com.

On September 22, 2007, Uncle Russ attending the Annual Meeting of HLBRS. At this time, he will be stepping down as President of HLBRS. Over many years, Uncle Russ has been the driving force behind HLBRS, and has been instrumental in making it what it is today, a dream come true. Now that the dream has been realized, he is passing the torch to someone else. Unfortunately, due to this meeting, he and Aunt Anita will be unable to attend the 2007 Nicholls Family Reunion. We know however, that the reunion and those attending will be in their thoughts.

On a less happy note, Uncle Russ recently had some medical challenges and spent a few days in hospital. The diagnosis was that he had suffered (what my medical sources describe as) "mini strokes with no lasting effects"). He is feeling better now, and has an appointment with a specialist tomorrow (August 24). Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

U P D A T E : I received a followup email from Uncle Russ today (August 24) reporting that he received a good report from the specialist. He is cleared to return to work at HLBRS ( Conductor, Station Master and Telegraph ). He is looking forward to that.

- Katelin Nicholls and the
Brampton Blazers Junior Women's Fastball Team captured the Bronze Medal at the Canadian National Championships in Surrey, British Columbia. The Blazers went through the round-robin portion of the tournament, even defeating the eventual tournament champions from Calgary and silver medalists from Pickering (Ontario 1). All in all, it was a very good tournament. The entire team, including Katelin, can be very proud of their accomplishment ... third best team in the nation ... not too bad at all. When it was over, Dad got to have his picture taken with his favorite player.

Aug 08 2007
- Jordan Nicholls returned home safely from
England, after attending the London International Youth Science Forum for two weeks as one of 219 participants representing 52 countries. He had a GREAT time, except for the food in his hall of residence. Fish (white, breaded, and "fish nuggets" which looked tantalizingly similar to chicken nuggets until you tasted them), egg and mayonnaise sandwiches, houmus ... not exactly his "cup of tea" (pun intended).

Jul 28 2007
- We are delighted to report that Aunt Ruth is feeling great. She had a 3 month checkup recently and is doing great health-wise as well. I had a little talk to her last night, as she and Uncle Stan were visiting my Mom (Aunt Marie). They were in Dunnville dropping off Aunt Jean after spending some time up at the cottage.

Remember Uncle Stan in your thoughts and prayers as he will be going in for a procedure on August 30 to have some tissue removed from his neck. Then on November 05, he will be having one of his knees done.

Jul 28 2007
- Lyle and Dorene are putting the final touches on a
new addition (picture is from October so it has changed a lot since then) to their house. When it's completed, I promise I will post an up-to-date picture (even if I have to go up there and take it myself).

Hey Lyle : Aunt Ruth wants to know if you've got the hole in yet.

Lyle and Dorene will be travelling to Pocono Raceway in Pennsylvania early in August to take in the NASCAR Pocono 500. I won't promise, but I bet if we asked nice, we might get to see a picture of that too.

Jul 22 2007
- Congratulations to Katelin Nicholls and the other members of the

You can follow their progress via the internet by visiting the tournament website. Check out the schedule or the results. Katelin and the rest of the Blazers would appreciate your support.

London International Youth Science Forum this summer in London, England. Jordan has completed his second year at York, studying Atmospheric Science. Needless to say, his Dad is pretty darn proud. Way to go kid. I wish I could say you got it from me.

May 08 2007
- Due to a change in the rules governing when the Caister Community Center could be booked, our normal week (first Saturday after school starts) was booked by someone else back in November. As a result, Stephanie has booked the next available week which is Saturday, September 22, 2007. Change your calendar right away. Tell your family.

Since the rule changes now allow the booking of the hall any time in the future (it used to be that you couldn't book before January), the date for 2008 has also been booked. It will be Saturday, September 13, 2008.

Apr 26 2007

Apr 13 2007
- Friday the 13th turned out to be just a little too windy and cold for yours truly to venture off to Port Dover by motorcycle. Maybe I'm getting soft as I get older, or maybe I'm getting smarter. I did start out, headed west, but it wasn't long before I realized that I wasn't going to be seeing the shores of Lake Erie on this day. As I returned home, I rationalized that the ride to Port Dover (or anywhere else for that matter), is supposed to be fun. Continuing this trip would not have been so. So, here I am, warm and cozy at home on my day off, spending time on another passion of mine, keeping our family website up-to-date. I hope you are having a great day too.

Hey Randy ... how about you?

Apr 09 2007
- Allan Nicholls and the boys from SBR did a fine job in their inaugural performance at Jordan House on Saturday, April 07. The evening began with many of the patrons torn between the entertainment on stage and the Leaf's game on TV. When the final buzzer sounded (Leafs won 6 - 5 over Montreal), the boys had the full attention of everyone in the house. And they did not disappoint. The crowd continued to grow, as more people (presumably ardent hockey fans) arrived. And rightfully so. The word is obviously out. These guys are good. You should check it out. It's worth the drive to Jordan (or St. Catherines)!

- We are delighted to hear and report that Aunt Ruth is doing well. We received the following update through Lori today.

Dear Family,

I'd like to express my thanks to all who have called inquiring after my health. We are all happy and relieved to report that I am responding well to treatment so far and have suffered fewer than normal side effects. The cancer in my lower bowel has been irradicated, the unidentified growth detected on my liver has tentatively been identified as a parasite, not cancer, and the cancerous cells in my esophagus are being reduced by the chemotherapy. Stan and I are definitely in good spirits and are enjoying the company and well wishes of our family and friends. Love to you all,

Auntie Ruth

P.S. All those who are hair-endowed are invited to send along any they have to spare! I am finally feeling my follicularly challenged brothers' pain in this area!

- Dear Friends of SBR
We have some news to share - 3 members of SBR ( Mike, Art and Allan ) have started another musical project.
Starting in January 2007 we will be playing at the newly renovated Jordan House, in the village of Jordan, under the name "100 Watt Grin".
We will focus on a more acoustic sound, concentrating on songs by Blue Rodeo, James Taylor, Van Morrison with plenty of classic rock tunes with a new feel.
Our first dates are Jan. 13th and Feb. 10th, 2007.
The best news of all - we start at 9:00 PM and play until midnight.
Please put these dates in your calendar - we will need your moral support to get this project off to a solid start.
FOR HARD CORE SBR SUPPORTERS
PLEASE NOTE: SBR IS ALIVE AND WELL AND WILL CARRY ON PLAYING AS LONG AS YOU COME TO SEE US!

- Congratulations to Katelin Nicholls and the
Chinguacousy Cougars who won SILVER in the Midget Girls Canadian Fastball Championships in Guelph today. The Cougars had 9 wins in the 12 games they played at the tournament, losing to Markham Jaguars in the gold medal game. For further information on the tournament, you can visit the tournament website by clicking here. You can also check out the historic box scores page for all the stats of each game.

Now it's bragging time ... sorry!
Katelin had several key hits over the course of the tournament, but the highlight of the week (for me) was in their second last game. Down 1 - 0 in the 4th inning, Katie hit a 3-run homerun to recharge the team and help them claw out a 4 - 3 victory over the Delta Heat (BC). This victory put them into the gold medal game. Way to go Kid.

- Summer is definitely coming. Uncle Russ reports that on May 20, the Huntsville and Lake of Bays Railway made it's first run of 2006. For the balance of the month of May and all of June we carry mostly school groups and seniors groups. Our power on these trains is our #3 diesel electric locomotive. On Saturday July 1st (Canada Day) we will be starting our steam locomotive operation and we'll be concentrating our attention to tourists.
We run this railway operation with 56 volunteers, who provide their expertise in engineers, fireman, conductors, station masters, ticket agents and telegraph operators. We're very proud of them all.
If you happen up this way we'd be glad to show you around.
Uncle Russ

Note from webmaster
It is definitely worth a visit.
Jordan, Katelin and myself dropped in last summer and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience.

- Just a little note to advise that our youngest daughter Gail Menard has been invited to take her senior concert band down to Walt Disney Place in Los Angeles Calif. to do a performance. Gail is the Music Director of the New Liskeard High School and her senior band consists of about 35 kids. They'll be taking a bus to Toronto and flying to L.A. If you hadn't already noticed, we're just a little proud of the kid. She's got more nerve than Dick Tracy!

- This is not really a news item but more a request. My daughter Alicia will be attending George Brown College in Toronto (St. James Campus - downtown) this coming September for 2 years. We were wondering if anyone knew of a place for her to stay that would provide her with a safe and comfortable environment. I would feel better if it was either with family or recommended by a family member. I can be contacted by email at castledeguerre@sympatico.ca or by phone at 905-734-9786.

Thanks, Barb (Nicholls) deGuerre

- Please consider helping Barb (Danyshyn) Dawson fulfill a personal dream and an important mission. Please read on.

I thought, while I was visiting the website, that I might check out what was listed in the marketplace. To my suprise, there was an option to 'beg' so I thought I might just make an entry.

I have made a decision to go on a mission trip with ALONGSIDE INTERNATIONAL to Africa in the end of May. My decision was precipitated by 3 events: a long-standing wish to serve others less fortunate, a recent article in a nursing journal on the AIDS epidemic in Africa, and the announcement of a mission trip to Zambia through my church. In doing so, I will be fulfilling a need in the local community, and taking a step toward a long-term personal goal of mission work following my retirement.

I have been nursing for 18 years in Canada, and have served on a volunteer basis in Grenada, West Indies on two occasions, most recently following Hurricane Ivan in 2004. I get a good deal of satisfaction from helping others and am looking forward to the opportunity to provide assistance in Lusaka, Zambia with the construction of a dormitory for street youth and AIDS orphans, and by providing health teaching in the community.

As funds for this trip, in total $3,500.00 per person, are to be raised by each participant, together with additional costs for supplies, insurance, and necessary innoculations, I could really use some help.

If anyone is inclined to make a donation to this cause, they may send a cheque for any amount made out to:
PARTNERS INTERNATIONAL, and have "BARBARA DAWSON-ZAMBIA TRIP" written in the memo field. It should then be directed to Randy Cannell, who will be the Group Leader for this mission. His address is

38 Captain Rolph Blvd.,
Markham, ON.,
L3P 2PS.

A 100% value tax deduction is available for donations greater than $20.00.

To anyone reading this who is unable to contribute monetarily, prayers for adequate funding, and for safety on behalf of myself and the rest of the team would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all for taking the time to consider making a donation on my behalf. We have a great family, don't we!!!

Barbara Dawson

I was receiving the requests in my email but was thinking that Darlene was also getting them. Not so. She does have them now however, and will be contacting you shortly (if she hasn't already). If you don't hear from her, submit your request again if you like. The page has changed slightly, so you are able to provide more details up front. Doug

- Oops. If you happened to visit this site between 7 and 9:30 this morning, you may have noticed that the guestbook, chat, reminiscing and college and careers pages were blank. I had a little brain fart and accidently wiped them out. I believe I have now restored them to their original state. If however, you notice that something is missing, please resubmit it as you did before. My apologies. Doug

We appreciate the tremendous amount of behind-the-scenes work you do. It's a huge responsibility that few would want on their shoulders. Speaking of which, Stephanie doesn't need any more kitchenware, so try to remember to take your dishes home with you when you leave.
THANKS also to Brian Sullivan (auctioneer), Brenda Vanslack (children's games) and all those who pitched in to help make it a banner day.

Sept 08 2003
- Important memo re: cook book defect
From: Darlene
Please notify me if yours or someone else's cook book has pages that are falling out. It's easy to contact me. Just press the 'email us' button on this website and tell me: -your name -your mailing address -number of defective books you have. They will be replaced at no additional charge to you or the reunion funds. It was my fault. I bound them myself to save money. I will cover the loss. Oh well. Some days you're the pigeon, some days you're the statue. Sorry, for the inconvenience this has caused. Thank goodness the web site recipe book doesn't have a binding!
Sincerely, Darlene
